Fusion Kitchen hits the spot

No matter how many times I see my work in editing suites or on my laptop, there’s something special about seeing it on ‘the telly’. Fusion Kitchen, our cooking and culture six part series, premiered on DCTV last night and it was a special moment. A Whatsapp group of everyone who was involved in the show – in front of camera or behind camera – was pinging with messages as we all settled in to watch Mykola and Viktoria share their foods and insights into their cultures with the amazing chef Tara Walker who welcomed the show to her kitchen and hosted the series.

Yebin, from Korean restaurant “Song and Jenn’s Kitchen” in Drogheda, prepares a spectacular feast alongside chef Tara Walker in Episode 5

The series runs all this week at 8pm each evening. Following yesterday’s Ukrainian episode, as I write I’m anticipating tonight’s show when Jasmine brings the exotic flavours and spices of her native India to Tara’s kitchen. Tomorrow night finds Ivan, from Brazil, wearing the Fusion Kitchen apron to represent his homeland. Thursday sees additional pressure on Tara because Linda is cooking for Ireland, so both of them are at pains to make sure they do the country proud. Friday features South Korea with Yebin, the singing chef from ever-popular Korean Street Food Restaurant ‘Song and Jenn’s Kitchen’ in Drogheda putting on such a feast that diners don’t know whether to eat it or take photos!. The final episode, on Saturday evening, features another famous Drogheda eatery – Suya Man. Proprietor, Ken, arrives at Tara’s with his big barrel barbecue to cook the extremely spicy and incredibly tasty ‘suya’ – Nigerian barbecued meats.

For those who can’t watch TV in the evenings, the whole series repeats next week at 2pm from Monday to Saturday. It’s on Virgin Media Channel 802 – DCTV, or you can watch it streaming live at dctv.ie/live

We’re very fortunate to have support for shows like this that are about people rather than about commercial success. For Fusion Kitchen, I extend my thanks enough to Coimisiún na Meán and to the SICAP team of Louth Local Development as well, of course, to broadcaster DCTV.
