Six short scripts sought for six short films in new project – Six ‘o the best
Since qualifying for the Oscars© in 2010 and picking up awards at festivals around the world with his Irish Film Board-funded short “Whatever Turns You On”, film maker Declan Cassidy has had a soft-spot for short films.
He is currently in mid production on short film, funded by the Coimisiún na Meán (formerly Broadcasting Authority of Ireland) through Dublin Community Television, that has been cast entirely through the TikTok social media platform, and this project has inspired a bigger one – Six o’ the best.
“The short film that I’m making now is a wonderful project,” said Declan. “By casting it through social media, we’ve had people coming forward that we’d never have found through traditional routes. It’s a great opportunity for them and for us to do something really special. Six o’ the best is based on that project. But instead of making one film, we’re making six.”
“We have to have the proposal in the CnaM by the end of the month, so we’re looking for six short film scripts. They can be from seasoned writers or from total amateurs. The important thing is that they’re great stories”
The six films will be of about 15 minutes length – which usually equates to about 15 pages of script – and Declan is looking for films that will have a common theme, so that they can be screened individually or all together in a 90 minute feature film.
“Social inclusion is one of the core areas that I’m focussed on,” said Declan. “I’m looking for scripts that tell stories about Irish society in an inclusive way. They could be about Irish communities, the non-Irish national newcomers to our social family, LGBT+ or any other facet of Irish life. I’m looking for hopeful or uplifting stories, though. We have enough anxiety in the world without adding to it!”
Anyone with a script that they feel might be suitable can submit it through this form.
“I’ve already had some super scripts in,” said Declan, “but I’m sure there are some more out there, waiting to be turned into films. There may be people with a script that they want to direct and produce themselves. I’m open to that. Other people might be happy to have a team take their script and make the film from it. We’ll can look for the cast and crew through social media to make that happen. This is about getting creative people involved and giving as many people as possible the chance to do something special.”
