A ‘centomila saluti’ to match our ‘céad míle fáilte
As founder of the non-profit community media organisation, EurAV European Audio Visual CLG, Declan was part of a team that flew to Sicily to attend a meeting for a new project that is aimed at supporting older people to navigate the tricky path between fact and fake news. EurAV, the Irish partner, are to develop media literacy training for radio, supported by partners from Slovakia, North Macedonia and the coordinating partner in Sicily’s coastal town of Tusa.
“The meeting was successful,” said Declan, “but the trip, itself, was a great success in other ways. We were guests of the Vice Mayor at a public reception and got to meet a lot of the local people. They were incredibly warm and welcoming – very much like visitors from overseas to Ireland say they find us. While Ireland is bigger than Sicily, and Sicily is part of Italy, we are both islands and I think that this might have something to do with our sense of community and our natural inclination to welcome people from overseas.
The project, Disinformation of Seniors in Rural Areas (DiSeRA), is funded by the European Union under its Erasmus + programme. Those interested can keep up to date with it at EurAV’s website https://eurav.com
